Is the Roof on Your Home Ready for Spring?

  1. Roofing Surface – Check for any curled, deteriorating, or missing shingles. Curled shingles can catch the wind and are more likely to be blown off. Any deteriorating or missing shingles are going to be areas of water collection, which could potentially lead to leaks in your roof. The same principle goes for other roofing surfaces as well; look for cracks in roof tiles, dented or damaged metal roofing, or erosion spots on asphalt roofing.
  2. Gutter Check – It’s a good time to clean out your gutters and check for any leaks or rust spots. Check your downspouts for clogs and make sure they are clear of debris. Clogged gutter systems can add extra weight and strain to your roof when filled with water and can contribute to the edges of your roof.
  3. Professional Inspection – Contacting a professional can be a good idea to check the hard to get spots. Any vent flashings need to be checked out as well. The winter may have damaged any vents, which could hinder circulation, and skylights may have hard to see cracks in the windows. Flashing around skylights, ventilation systems, and chimneys should be inspected to ensure proper seals around any protruding appliances.
